Incident Report #117

A member of our community has reported receiving a phone call yesterday from someone purporting to be from Visa who said that a suspicious payment of $1,800 had been charged to his credit card from an overseas payee. The caller was female and suggested that he open a Google page and enter something into a search field to enable the download of a app " for his further security" and that the charge against his credit card would be reversed. Fortunately the person concerned astutely told the caller not to ring again and hung up. The number of the caller was 0420 040769. Please be vigilant in this "silly season". Check with your own bank either by phone or online to view your card statements if you feel something is amiss. Scammers never use the same caller number twice and often use a number very close to the number they themselves are calling. Your bank or credit card company will always establish a security protocol. This scammer has been reported to the cyber security department of the bank concerned. Best advice - hang up.
