Noosa Waters Update

Dear all Noosa Waters Residents,

This post provides a focused update on the Noosa Waters canal system, specifically regarding recent infrastructure upgrades and the NWRA's ongoing advocacy.

A Major Win for Our Waterways: New Salinity Pump is Live!

First, some fantastic news. As you may have seen in Council's recent project update, the installation of a new, German-manufactured primary salinity pump is now complete! This is a significant achievement, replacing a 30-year-old unit and restoring full reliability to our salinity exchange system. This crucial piece of infrastructure, and as a result of our advocacy, is now funded by Noosa Council — not the waterfront levy. It works in tandem with the refurbished backup pump to ensure our canal system operates at its best. This is a testament to Council's commitment to safeguarding our environment and maintaining the amenity of Noosa Waters.

NWRA Advocacy: A Smarter Pumping Cycle for Better Water Quality

With the new pump now in place, the NWRA's focus has shifted to optimising its operation for the best possible environmental outcomes. A key initiative we are advocating for is a change to the current pumping schedule.

Currently, the pump operates on a nightly 12-hour cycle. The NWRA has proposed a move to a more strategic schedule: two 6-hour cycles timed specifically to coincide with the cleaner, incoming high tides.

The objective behind this proposed change is to improve key water quality indicators within the canal system. By pumping during the incoming tides, we aim to increase salinity and dissolved oxygen levels more effectively while also reducing turbidity.

This proposal was a central topic at our recent quarterly meeting with Council. The feasibility of running the pump on high tides has been extensively discussed, and it was determined to be a viable option. The NWRA will continue to advocate for this change as a logical next step in improving the management of our canal ecosystem.

Working Together is the Way Forward

Our partnership with Council is stronger than ever. We are refining our Partnering Agreement to ensure it provides a clear roadmap for governance and long-term planning, and we are improving how we work together.

Eenie Creek Road Noise

We also had a very direct and productive conversation about the long-standing concerns of residents living along the road corridor, particularly regarding noise and the deteriorating fence. This now sits as a budget item in the infrastructure plan, and we are optimistic that there will be further progress to report on this front over the coming months.

Brilliant outcome Adrian regarding the rescheduling to have the pump inputting at high tide instead of just a regular nightime schedule. This should ensure fresh clean water coming in from the sea!! I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements. So now with ongoing 'good' relationships with Council, can we now push for the next phase of rocks for the revetment wall! My problem here has been going on for over 3 years and wall gap growing large and tilting. Hopefully Council can also put this in their biudget, as I was promised over a year ago!!!!!
