Current state of the canal system

Dear Members,

As a number of you are already aware, there is currently an algae bloom in the canal system, more apparent in areas with lower rates of water flow.

While the salinity pump was out of action for 8 weeks, water quality checks were carried out weekly by Council. Although these tests did not highlight any issues with the waterways, this unfortunately was not the case. We raised our concerns in our quarterly meeting with Council last Tuesday. They advised they were aware of the situation and that algae samples had been taken for analysis.

Meanwhile, NWRA has continued to update Council with all concerns raised by members, supplying photographs of the worst affected areas and drone footage (supplied by Adrian Reed) providing a broader picture of the impact.

We will keep you informed as we receive updates from Council.

Regards,

Neale

The algae is the worst I have seen it in 15 years living here. I am at the far eastern end of NW so the furthest away from the pump. I would be interested to know how many hours per day they are running the pump now esp to get rid of the algae, and also where did they take the water samples from to determine that there was 'no issue'! The algae is now very deep seated and at my place is about 2 or 3 feet deep as well as dealing with the floating rafts. My concern is that this may take a long time to eradicate...if ever. Interested to know other people's exeriences here...

Neil, can you give an update on the status of the salinity pumps? Is one operational yet?

Hi Tim,

This was an update we received on the 7 Aug.

Water Quality - From the last 8 weeks of data collection there is little variation (0-10%) between Noosa Waters Canals & Noosa River (baseline). As of 1/8:

Salinity – currently sitting 10% higher than Noosa River at 22.2 g/L avg. across intake & outlet sites. Noting this is still within a normal range based on 2024 & 2025 historic data which ranges between 4.7- 28.9 g/L

Dissolved Oxygen - sitting 5% lower than Noosa River at 94.75 % avg. across intake & outlet sites. Noting this is within normal expected range for 2024 & 2025 historic data which ranges between 52.35-118%

Regards,

Neale
