Dear Members,
We have just been advised by Council that a leak has been detected in the underground pipe connecting the salinity pump station to the outlet into the canal system located at the Mermaid Quay end of the canal (see Council notice below).
Council has become aware of a pipe leak in the system and has arranged for pipe cameras to be deployed to locate the leak and its significance.
Until the leak location and significance is determined, the pump system will not be operating and lower water volumes in the canal system will be experienced.
Council is aware of the pre-existing situation with the algae and has commissioned a specialised contractor to undertake manual removal to improve amenity of the canal system. Please note that testing of the algae does not indicate human health concerns.
Further advice will be provided ASAP on timing of repairs and algae removal.
We have asked for a meeting with Council to understand and discuss the situation and this will occur next Tuesday (30 September 2025).
We will keep you informed as more information comes to hand.
Regards,
NWRA Committee
We have asked for timing. We have a dedicated face to face meeting to discuss on Monday.
Does our committee know when the 'specialized contractor' will start the manual removal of the algae? Or is this a question for council at your next meeting? The algae is still growing on the rocks and producing the heads. Here's a photo from today.
